The lowdown on high definition television sets

If you're not going to be at the big game, the next best place to watch the Super Bowl is in-front a big screen high definition television. HD, LCD, DLP, flat screen, projection, plasma... Consumers are left with two questions, what does it all mean? And, which one's right for me?

For those looking to switch from standard to high definition, the best advice is to educate yourself before you buy your new set. The one that's on sale may not be the right one for you.

There is some confusion about a misconception that everyone will need a HDTV when the federally mandated switch from analog to digital signal takes affect in 2009. That is in fact, not true. If you are able to receive a cable or satellite signal from a digital receiver now, then nothing will change for you in the future.

P100 by Elmo

ELMO IS SHIPPING the P100, a new high-end document camera. It offers SXGA (1280 x 1024) native resolution and supports HDTV output with progressive scan (720p). It’s designed to display live images of documents placed on the unit’s flatbed. (A built-in LCD display helps with positioning.) But the camera also includes a card slot for presenting stored images, as well as a USB connector for displaying images from a computer. Images on a card can be displayed in slideshow format or split view. With the aid of a computer, the P100 can create a split screen showing live and stored images simultaneously. Other features include 16x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom, a lens designed to minimize distortion, and a "clear-text" mode for optimizing black-and-white contrast for displaying text only.

Corning Has $646 Million Profit; TV Glass Sales Gain (Update4)

Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Corning Inc., the biggest maker of glass for liquid-crystal displays, posted a fourth-quarter profit that beat analysts' estimates as sales of glass for television sets rose. The shares jumped the most in more than two years.

Net income was $646 million, or 41 cents a share, compared with a loss of $33 million, or 2 cents, a year earlier, Corning said today in a statement. Excluding a tax gain, earnings were 31 cents, beating an average analyst estimate of 28 cents in a Bloomberg survey. Sales rose 14 percent to $1.37 billion.

Consumer demand for flat-panel TVs sparked sales of glass used in LCD sets. The Corning, New York-based company didn't have to cut prices at the same rate as customers including Samsung Electronics Co. and Sharp Corp., which sell the TVs.

Dude, You're Getting a Sony

Computer maker Dell has begun retooling its consumer business strategy in an effort to make its electronics offerings more appealing to customers. Its first move: offering Sony Bravia flat-screen televisions for sale on its Web site.

At the moment, Dell is offering the 46-inch KDL-46V2500 1080p-capable Bravia LCD TV along with two 40-inch Bravia models, the 1080p KDL-40V2500 and the 720p KDL-40S2010. The units are priced at $2,999, $2,199, and $1,799 respectively, including Dell's standard-operating-procedure instant discounts; the discounts mean the units significantly undercut Sony's asking price for the same units.

In a statement, Dell indicated it planned to continue offering its own Dell-branded televisions at sizes of 37-inches and smaller, but also planned to offer a "wide assortment" of televisions from other manufacturers which "meet Dell's high standards for excellence." Dell did not provide any additional information on what other television brands it might start offering, or when additional brands might go on sale via Dell.
