| Dude, You're Getting a Sony
Computer maker Dell has begun retooling its consumer business strategy in an effort to make its electronics offerings more appealing to customers. Its first move: offering Sony Bravia flat-screen televisions for sale on its Web site. At the moment, Dell is offering the 46-inch KDL-46V2500 1080p-capable Bravia LCD TV along with two 40-inch Bravia models, the 1080p KDL-40V2500 and the 720p KDL-40S2010. The units are priced at $2,999, $2,199, and $1,799 respectively, including Dell's standard-operating-procedure instant discounts; the discounts mean the units significantly undercut Sony's asking price for the same units. In a statement, Dell indicated it planned to continue offering its own Dell-branded televisions at sizes of 37-inches and smaller, but also planned to offer a "wide assortment" of televisions from other manufacturers which "meet Dell's high standards for excellence." Dell did not provide any additional information on what other television brands it might start offering, or when additional brands might go on sale via Dell.
Sharp 108-inch LCD HDTV Displayed at CES
Sharp, a worldwide leader in flat-panel Liquid Crystal Display Televisions (LCD TV), has successfully developed a 108-inch LCD TV, the world's largest, and showed a prototype at 2007 CES. This 108-inch LCD screen, which measures 93.9-inches wide by 52.9-inches high, features a Black Advanced Super View Full-Spec HD LCD panel manufactured at Sharp's Kameyama Plant No. 2, the first plant in the world to use 8th generation glass substrates. With this development, Sharp has demonstrated that it is possible to produce LCD TVs in sizes ranging from 13-inches to super-large sizes like the 108-inch, and that LCD is the predominant display device in the flat-panel television market, which is forecast to grow dramatically in the future. Since developing the world's first 14-inch color TFT LCD TV in 1988, Sharp has consistently led the industry with larger screen sizes, introducing the first 45-inch model in 2004 and the first 65-inch LCD TV.
High-definition television: How much of it can you stand to see?
Reports Sharon of Roseville: "Today's topic is HDTV. How it all began: I was making a Sam's Club run and was mesmerized by the TV display at the store's entrance. There were Shrek and Donkey in full living color. I could see the moles on Shrek's neck and each and every hair on Donkey. "It was one of those moments that could have gone either way within minutes but I allowed common sense to take the place of instant gratification and decided to consult with my High-Tech son-in-law. "Step Two: I told my son-in-law that I wanted one of those TVs, and he told me to research it. I did. Here's one TV I found: '50" HD Plasma TV incorporates advanced technology to reproduce beautiful, natural-looking images with exceptional, full 1080p HD resolution.
